TOME TO THE WEATHER MACHINE
"Raphi Gottesman's tape under his given name is a thing of great diversity that finds its common core in effulgent guitar work and structurally sound compositions. Maybe you could tell in the way that these tracks feel built from the ground up, but Gottesman drums, has drummed or somehow contributed for groups Odawas, The Fresh & Onlys, The Black Swans and Sonny & the Sunsets. Maybe it is the drummer in him because these tracks feel fully-fleshed out and the result of compositional decision-making around rhythm rather than home-studio fuckery (I'm sure there is plenty of that though). Tracks that include the whole one-man-band set up are some of the most rewarding listens of a year already brimming with great music. The opening bass line on "If I Wanted a Boat" is straight out of some Serge Gainsbourg Parisian pop meets jazz-based Midwestern post-rock. The way the trumpets follow the guitars harmony is hair-raising and reminiscent of an incredibly fertile but short lived Chicago/Champaign-Urbana scene in the mid-90's where former punk rock kids discovered jazz and realized they were really good at playing their instruments. Much of what there is to love about this record is Gottesman guitar playing. It can move from delicate folk, to the forlorn slide in landscape-making post-rock style, to muscular and triumphant in the feedback-heavy "Skokie Friend". The aforementioned forlorn slide guitar is a perfect accompaniment to the jazz-influenced rolls and fills on "Signed, Noisemaker". While the blueprint-rich compositions on "Signed, Noisemaker" make this an album easy to return to over and over, tracks that are more cloud than building are still as beautiful as anything else out there. Organ heavy "Need Not be a House to be Haunted" features high pitches that pierce through the organ drones that sound inexplicably like a Glass Armonica (which I will forever associate with new age CD thrift store finds and Benjamin Franklin). "Till the Anchor Holds" is another example of Gottesman's eliding, spectral guitar work that by sheer timing and delay can create longing passages the same tonal quality of a picture taken out of the backseat window of a road trip with your family when you were 11. Not even out for a month and Signed, Noisemaker is on its second press. Which is what happens to super limited run tapes on amazing Swedish tape labels. You can get this one from Raphi, with the same stunning artwork by our pal Liz Pavlovic."

Hobo Toilet-
"The music on "Signed, Noisemaker" is quiet and of the FNL variety. There are mostly guitar notes played with a trumpet on the first song and piano notes later on (some of which have that church organ vibe) It's calm, serene and soothing but not enough to put you to sleep. Sometimes a song such as "Older Than Ferns", the last song, can even remind me of The Cancer Conspiracy. Overall this seems to grow more solemn from start to finish, almost as if to make the end result- a transition into nothingness because it's over- feel like that much easier to take. This might not be available on cassette any more but you should still listen to this and keep your ear to the ground for Raphi Gottesman who is sure to do more beautiful things following this one."

Lost in a sea of sound -
From the start of this cassette Raphi Gottesman sets the tone of relaxation far from the monotonous patterns we live in. Signed, Noisemaker engages the listener with depth of composition by utilizing multiple skilled musicians through out the nine tracks of the tape. The style of much of the guitar playing exists just on the raw side of electric. The sounds gently spill from the speakers giving a feeling that would suit watching vintage vacation films. Music of simple pleasures, like jumping in a cool river or hiking along it's bank. There are moments when this cassette slips into solemn moods. Tracks like "need not be a house to be haunted", "skokie friend" & "sombre pages bore no print" are good examples of these transitions.
Together, with the more light hearted tunes, the entire album ebbs and flows through feelings we all encounter. This is what makes Signed, Noisemaker so interesting. The music is so laid back and unassuming, our emotions slowly bond with the mood this listen takes you on. This cassette was originally released on the Swedish Fluere Tapes label in an edition of 20. With six releases since their start up, five of them are sold out including this one. Fluere Tapes has shaped there artists and release quantities into the perfect amount of "purchase immediately"..... Raphi Gottesman's release was no exception to this formula. In order to appease those who missed the first 20 from Fluere, a second pressing of 30 copies has been released and he has them for sale on his own bandcamp page. Take a listen to Signed, Noisemaker when you have some time you want to enjoy. The music is well suited to enhance your presence within the patterns of life.
